Thenmala DAM

The Thenmala Dam, also known as the Kallada-Parappar Dam, is located at Thenmala in the Thenmala Grama Panchayat, along the Punalur - Shenkottai (Tamil Nadu) route in the Kollam district of Kerala. Notably, Thenmala is home to Kerala's very first eco-tourism center. Built across the Kallada River as part of the Kallada Irrigation Project, the construction of this dam commenced in 1961 with an initial budget of ₹13.28 crores. The project was executed under the supervision of the Kallada Irrigation and Tree Crop Development Project, and its water is utilized for both irrigation and power generation. As the largest irrigation dam in Kerala, Thenmala boasts a massive reservoir area, which includes the Pallamvetti Saddle Dam as a subsidiary structure. The entire dam project spans an expanse of 92,800 hectares and is completely encircled by dense, lush forest regions
