Thenmala Ecotourism
Thenmala Ecotourism Project
Thenmala Ecotourism is an ecotourism project located in Thenmala, in Kerala. Established in 2001, it is India's first planned ecotourism destination. The project is managed by the Thenmala Ecotourism Promotion Society under the Government of Kerala. Thenmala is also the headquarters of the Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary, located within the Kulathupuzha Reserve Forest.
The project is divided into three zones:
- Leisure Zone
- Cultural Zone
- Adventure Zone
Butterfly Park
Out of the more than 300 species of butterflies found in Kerala, around 120 species can be seen in the Butterfly Park at Thenmala. The best time to observe them is before the sun becomes too bright. The adjoining garden features a variety of plants and flowers, ranging from wildflowers to orchids. Visitors can also take photographs of the butterflies. Sculptures illustrating the life cycle of a butterfly are displayed here as well.
Nakshatra Vanam (Star Forest)
Located adjacent to the Butterfly Park, Nakshatra Vanam preserves trees associated with all 27 nakshatras (lunar constellations). Visitors can learn about the connection between each tree and its corresponding nakshatra through the information displayed there.
Deer Rehabilitation Centre
This centre is located about two kilometers from the Butterfly Park. Species such as spotted deer, sambar deer, and barking deer can be seen here. The area is rich in large trees and natural greenery. Elevated watchtowers have been constructed for visitors to relax and enjoy the surroundings.
